Big Box Retail Case Study - Unit Performance
Major Retail Chain, Victorville, CA

The three units installed have similar operation parameters, but were installed in accordance with the structure of the existing units. All three units were designed to move up to 7.5 Tons of load between the hours of 11:30 AM and 8 PM.

The first unit is a 2 stage 15 Ton rooftop unit with stage 2 disabled during the peak hours. Stage 1 of the rooftop unit is reconfigured to be stage 2 during peak hours with the Ice Bear® System being stage 1. The performance graph to the right shows the power consumption of the system on a daily basis. The Ice Bear® System builds ice during the evening and is then able to sustain the 7.5 Ton cooling load during the day using only 300 Watts.

The second unit is a single stage 15 Ton rooftop unit with compressor unloading. This made the isolation of stages much more difficult and was accomplished by building a separate control circuit. Stage 1 of the rooftop unit was reconfigured to be stage 2 during peak hours with the Ice Bear® System being stage 1. The unit 2 graph to the right shows the performance of the system. During the peak hours, only 4 of the 6 cylinders on the rooftop unit are operating while the Ice Bear® Module satisfies the rest of the load.

The third unit installed is a single stage 15 Ton rooftop unit with compressor unloading and was configured similar to unit 2 with a separate control circuit. This unit’s performance can be viewed to the right as well.
