Bloomberg Brief features Ice Energy in Q&A

With mandated energy storage ahead in California, the issue of how to meet utilities’ need for clean affordable capacity has taken center stage. Bloomberg New Energy Finance Reporter Siobhan Wagner turned to Ice Energy for a Q&A session featured in the July 22 issue of Bloomberg Brief.

Hopkins described the current model in which utilities or their customers purchase Ice Bears and use them distributed on-site at locations where air conditioning costs are especially high during peak demand. He indicated that the future of energy storage may lie in power purchase agreements. Wagner compared this model to buying “storage like traditional power supplies.” Hopkins describes it this way: “Instead of transferring Ice Bears over to the utility, we will be providing the utility a long-term storage service from those units and the storage will be sold over 20 years. So very much like traditional power purchase agreements.”
