WINDSOR, CO – April 13, 2010
– Ice Energy, a leading provider of advanced energy storage solutions
to the electric utility industry, today announced the appointment of
Mike Hopkins as Executive Vice President and General Counsel.
With
nearly three decades of experience in both private legal practice and
entrepreneurial environments, the addition of Hopkins to Ice Energy’s
senior management team underscores the company’s commitment to
developing and deploying utility-scale energy storage projects.
“As
engagements with utility customers have moved rapidly to large-scale
system deployment, it was critical that we strengthen our executive team
with in-house legal counsel of the highest integrity and experience,”
said Frank Ramirez, CEO of Ice Energy. “Mike is focused on closing a
significant pipeline of business opportunities, and was instrumental in
securing our recent 53-Megawatt agreement with the Southern California
Public Power Authority. His business acumen and emotional IQ will prove
critical as we build out our strategic partner network to deliver our
transformational solution in the domestic and global utility markets.”
Hopkins
previously was a Partner in the pre-eminent Canadian law firm Bennett
Jones LLP, recognized internationally as a leader in the fields of
energy and climate change. During his tenure with the firm, he
specialized in the development and financing of power projects, served
on the firm's Executive Committee and led their Utilities Group,
International Group and Independent Power Group.
Hopkins left the
Bennett Jones in 2002 to serve as CEO of a private datacenter
developer. He later co-founded a geospatial information services
company, Terra Image USA, and has assisted and advised several early
stage start-up companies, including Ice Energy.
“I’ve been a
long-time believer in Ice Energy’s technology and its product
offerings,” said Hopkins. “By providing the utility industry a powerful,
cost-effective solution that revolutionizes peak load management, the
company has the potential to fundamentally transform energy system
efficiency and grid reliability at a time when it is critically
important. Today, it is poised to achieve significant market growth, and
I am excited to join the Ice Energy team at this critical stage of the
company’s growth.”
Hopkins holds a B.A. and a law degree from the
University of Ottawa, an M.A. (Law and Economics) from the University
of Miami, and an MBA from the University of Alberta.
