Joseph Gorman

Chairman of the Board

Joseph T. Gorman is retired Chairman and CEO of TRW Inc., a post he held from 1988 through 2001. He originally joined TRW in 1968, and served in many executive capacities before being named President and Chief Operating Officer in 1985.

Mr. Gorman, a past chairman of the U.S.-Japan Business Council, received Japan's 1994 Prime Minister's Trade Award for his contributions toward promoting improved U.S.-Japanese trade relations. He serves on the boards of the U.S.-China Business Council and The Prince of Wales International Business Leaders Forum. He was a trustee of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Foundation and the Committee for Economic Development, and served as co-chairman of The Business Roundtable.

He is a member of the President's Export Council, the Council on Foreign Relations, the President's Advisory Group of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, The Business Roundtable's Policy and Planning Committees and the National Bureau of Economic Research. In addition, he serves as co-chair of the Joint Automotive/Supplier Governmental Action Council, council member of the World Economic Forum, and senior member of The Conference Board.

A leader in education reform, Mr. Gorman is a founding member of the Ohio Governor's Education Management Council and is a trustee of the New Ohio Institute. He is a member of the Business-Higher Education Forum, Kent State University Foundation, and the Yale Alumni Association.

Mr. Gorman is former chairman of Leadership Cleveland and ex officio vice-chairman of Cleveland Tomorrow. He serves on the board of the Greater Cleveland Growth Association and served on the Board of Directors of United Way Services. He is a member of the Founders Society of the Cleveland Museum of Art and is a trustee of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, the Musical Arts Association, and the Cleveland Playhouse.

Mr. Gorman is a current director of Alcoa Inc., the Procter & Gamble Company, National City Corporation, and Imperial Chemical Industries plc.

Mr. Gorman holds a bachelor's degree from Kent State University and a doctoral degree from Yale Law School. Upon graduation from law school in 1962, he practiced general corporate law in Cleveland for five years.
